A gathering, start to finish

Forty years, eighty guests, one long evening.

How a 40th anniversary garden supper came together. The couple and their evening are made up for this concept build, and stock photos stand in for the real thing.

  1. Ten months out

    The first call

Their daughter called on their behalf: "They'll say they don't want a fuss. They want a fuss." Budget, guest list of about eighty, and one rule from the couple: no microphones.

  2. Eight months out · Partial planning

    Walking the grounds

We walked three gardens. The one with the oldest oaks won, mostly because the couple had picnicked under one in 1985. We mapped where the evening sun would fall at seven.

  3. Three months out

    The table test

One full place setting in the studio: their wedding china, rented crystal, linen napkins folded the plain way. We cut the centerpieces down so people could see each other across the table.

  4. The day · 2:00pm

    Setup under the pavilion

Tables up by two, flowers by three, chairs wiped down after a short shower at quarter past. The rain plan stayed in the van.

  5. The day · 8:15pm

    Toasts without microphones

We moved the toasts to between courses and sat the speakers in the middle of the long table. Their son went first. Nobody needed a microphone.

  6. The day · 11:00pm

    The last table

Family stayed after the guests left. We packed down around them, left one string of lights on and a pot of coffee on the table.
